Tahrir Square

June 30, 2013

This video was made on 30 June 2013, a day after Egyptians gathered in their hundreds of thousands to voice their opposition against the rule of Mohammed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, which had taken power in Egypt one year before.

During these days, I shuttled between Tahrir Square and other sites of protest, including Rab‘a al-‘Adawiyya and Cairo University, where the Muslim Brotherhood gathered to defend the legitimacy of their president. The scene is described in more detail in my book The Fourth Ordeal: The History of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, 1968-2018 in Chapter VI, titled “Revolution, Rise and Fall”, which describes the period from 25 January 2011, when the Egyptian uprising started, to 3 July 2013, when Morsi was ousted (see voice memo for an accompanying audio track and the map below for an indication of the geography of the protest sites during these days).
